Religious Education (a.k.a Sunday School)

Religious education for Unitarian Universalist children focuses on teaching our children about the religious world and encouraging them to take their place in it. Through stories, discussions, games, art projects, and music, our children learn about our shared Unitarian Universalist values, how to distinguish right from wrong, the diversity of religious beliefs, and the importance of questioning and forming their own beliefs.

At Oaklandon, the children are encouraged to be themselves, express their thoughts and feelings, and most importantly develop their beliefs with knowledge and information from many sources. This program involves the students in many different experiences, in order to meet a variety of learning styles; music, art, drama, and stories. Each year Miss Sandy takes the best of the UUA curricula and creates lots of fun and unique activities to stimulate thoughtful ideas, encourage expression, develop creativity and encourage questioning. One rule at Oaklandon, is that everyone's ideas are respected and no one is an authority - not even Miss Sandy. "I don't have any of the answers, only great questions!"

Since learning doesn't end at age 18, Adult Religious Education will explore, Building Your Own Theology- Ethics. BYOT-Ethics draws on the concept of the "Moral Compass" to identify eight modes of ethical decision-making. Using case studies from literary, historical, and contemporary sources, Ethics provides an opportunity to explore the processes, values, and theologies that participants rely on to make difficult moral and ethical decisions in their lives.

Sandra M. Windsor is Oaklandon's Religious Education Director. Sandy has her BS in Elementary Education and her Master of Education Degree as well. She also holds a lifetime license to teach in the State of Indiana. She has a genuine love and respect for our youth and takes fun very seriously. As a matter of fact, the children remind their parents about attending church on Sunday!

"This year our focus will be on lessons we can learn from the World's religions, God Images, and what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist. At Oaklandon, it is safe to think new things, it is safe to say what's on your mind and it is ok to be different."

Registration for the new school year will be held on Sundays from 10:30am to 12:30pm. If you have any questions about the program you can contact Sandy at any time at 317-750-7419, you can read about the UUA approved curriculum at www.uua.org/re/currmap/index.php, or just stop by one Sunday morning and check us out. You can fill out the registration form (See side bar at left) and email it to religiouseducation@oaklandonuu.org or fax it to 317-823-0902.
