Religious Education (a.k.a Sunday School)

Religious education for Unitarian Universalist children focuses on teaching our children about the religious world and encouraging them to take their place in it. Through stories, discussions, games, art projects, and music, our children learn about our shared Unitarian Universalist values, how to distinguish right from wrong, the diversity of religious beliefs, and the importance of questioning and forming their own beliefs.

Sandra M. Windsor is OUUC's Religious Education Director. Sandy has a BS in Elementary Education and a Master of Education Degree as well as a lifetime license to teach in the State of Indiana. She has a genuine love and respect for our youth and takes fun very seriously. As a matter of fact the children remind their parents about attending church on Sunday!

At OUUC, the children are encouraged to be themselves, express their thoughts and feelings, and most importantly develop their beliefs with knowledge and information from many sources. This program involves the students in many different experiences, in order to meet a variety of learning styles; music, art, drama, and stories. Each year Miss Sandy takes the best of the UUA curricula and creates lots of fun and unique activities to stimulate thoughtful ideas, encourage expression, develop creativity and encourage questioning. One rule at OUUC is that everyone's ideas are respected.

Our growing congregation respects and appreciates the strong history of this church and its beautiful sanctuary and building. And yet the programs and religious education at OUUC are fun and innovative. This year we are going to talk with people who are UU Buddhists and UU Christians, as well as learning about the basic tenets of many other religions.

The 2009-10 school year will focus on several new sources and approved UUA curriula. We'll talk about Kid's Daily Dilemmas, Let's Talk about Leadership for Kids, and we'll visit Magic Wanda's Travel Emporium. We will talk with UU's who are Buddhist and figure out just how that works. We'll also learn how to talk with others who want us to believe exactly they way they do. And we'll harvest our garden grown tomatoes for our service project.

Registration for the new school year will be held on Sundays from 10:15 am to 12:30 pm. If you have any questions about the program you can contact Sandy at any time at 317-903-3352 or email religiouseducation@oaklandonuu.org. Read about the UUA approved curriculum at www.uua.org/re/currmap/index.php, or just stop by one Sunday morning and check us out. You can fill out the registration form (See side bar at left) and email it to religiouseducation@oaklandonuu.org or simply bring it with you on Sunday!
